Cold chain and arrival condition: where risk management begins

In the perishables industry, the challenge does not end when the cargo leaves origin. A critical part of the operation takes place while the product is handled, consolidated, transported and finally delivered at destination.

In recent publications on the blueberry industry, RSK highlighted that post-harvest handling, the cold chain and logistics are decisive factors in remaining competitive, especially in markets where arrival condition and the commercial shelf life of the product are increasingly important.

Managing risk before the incident

Risk management does not begin when a claim arises. It starts much earlier, by understanding where the critical points lie within the operation.

Internal procedures, consolidation, stowage, temperature records and cargo documentation can provide important information for later understanding what happened during transport. RSK has previously identified these elements as part of a broader strategy of preparedness and risk management in export operations.

The controls required may vary by product, route, contract and mode of transport. The analysis must therefore respond to the specific characteristics of each operation.

From prevention to recovery

When an incident does occur, a properly documented operation allows the case to be approached with more supporting evidence.

RSK defines its loss control service as the analysis of the main causes of loss in order to identify risks, reduce their impact and strengthen prevention.

This approach connects prevention and recovery: understanding where risks arise helps both to reduce future losses and to properly analyse those that have already occurred.
